Description & Objectives

Students will be introduced to anglophone business environments, and will learn to be operational in such a context. As well as learning about essential aspects of companies and specific features of the English language encountered in such an environment, students will broaden their knowledge of current events and economic issues through the use of contemporary texts/articles, to strengthen receptive language skills such as listening and reading for gist and detail. Students will also reinforce communicative skills, speaking on the phone, perfecting grammar and consolidating course vocabulary through various oral activities, the final presentation, and writing reports and emails.Learning OutcomesIntended subject specific learning outcomes. On successfully completing the modules of semestre 1 & 2 students will be able to:Function confidently in English on a social and professional level within a general professional context and be confident to undertake further professional training.Communicate effectively in writing and orally in everyday situations in a professional context, including leaving voicemail messages/professional telephone communication, producing professional emails, effective presentations and visual aids, oral summaries of business or economic texts or written in the form of short reports (Common European Framework of Reference indicative level: to move from B1 to B2);Understand and accurately use an extended vocabulary and specialised forms of expression and register of the contemporary English business context. Students will develop their confidence in the use of specialised terminology and appropriate register in a professional context.Intended generic learning outcomes. On successfully completing the modules of semestre 1 & 2 students will be able to:Communicate and work as part of a team on a research and presentation project;Problem solve by undertaking independent research in the library collections and using appropriate academic databases online as well as being critical or online sources;Demonstrate transferable skills necessary for employment at the appropriate level in the target language: oral communication, bringing together information and being able to summarise it, playing an active role in teamwork, presentations, networking and other professional events.
