Traduction de textes de français en anglais.

Ce cours moodle a pour vocation d'assurer la continuité du cours 43b, en ces temps de fermeture de l'université pour cause de covid-19.Je posterai chaque semaine le cours et le TD.

Course description: The course involves the translation of a variety of texts – extracts from press articles, essays and novels – from French into English. Texts are given to the students every week. The correction is done collectively in class the week after. Testing: There will be two exams during the semester. The first is before the October holiday, the second at the end of the course. The final exam will be a translation of a text of about 300 words. Both American and British English are acceptable, as long as the student is consistent.  During the course, students will also be required to hand in at least one translation assignment by email. This assignment is not graded, but it is necessary that you submit a paper so that your use of English can be checked by the teacher. Students are encouraged to bring French/English or English dictionaries to the class. Grammar guides are also welcome. The final exam will take place without a dictionary. Participation counts to your final grade: if you miss classes your final grade will be lowered.

Study of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North and South. Examination of themes and narrative techniques relevant of the Victorian period and Victorian fiction.

The course proposes to help students improve their skills in different areas, including grammar, vocabulary, listening and writing. Students will be graded on listening and writing skills (80 per cent) participation (marks will also be deducted for absence) and presentations in class. In case of absence, the student must inform the teacher and present a justification of absence by the following week. There will be a writing task to submit before the October break. Étude du roman de Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South (1855), Penguin Classics L’examen du roman porte sur les procédés d’écriture dans le contexte de l’époque victorienne et de ses grands bouleversements à la fois économiques, sociaux et culturels. Étude de la manière dont l’œuvre s’inscrit dans le cadre du roman social qui dénonce, par le biais de la fiction réaliste, les conséquences de la révolution industrielle.

This course proposes a methodical work through activities such as written compositions (summaries and reviews) and oral presentations in order to improve the student's grasp of English.

This course introduces students to fundamental notions of English phonetics, through transcription and oral practice.
