 Thème. 2020   Teacher: Dominic Gavin / dominic.gavin@univ-tln.fr   Course description: This semester we will be translating extracts from the news on current affairs and business. Texts are given to the students every week. You have to translate them before the next class and the correction is done collectively the week after. Testing: There will be two exams during the semester. The first is before the October holiday, the second at the end of the course. The final exam will be a translation of a text of about 300 words. Both American and British English are acceptable, as long as the student is consistent. Participation in class activities contributes to your final grade. Participation may count to your final grade: if you miss too many classes your grade will be lowered. Students are encouraged to bring French/English or English dictionaries to the class. Grammar guides are also welcome. The final exam will take place without a dictionary.

Étude du roman de Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South (1855), Penguin Classics L’examen du roman porte sur les procédés d’écriture dans le contexte de l’époque victorienne et de ses grands bouleversements à la fois économiques, sociaux et culturels. Étude de la manière dont l’œuvre s’inscrit dans le cadre du roman social qui dénonce, par le biais de la fiction réaliste, les conséquences de la révolution industrielle.

This course proposes a methodical work through activities such as written compositions (summaries and reviews) and oral presentations in order to improve the student's grasp of English.

This course introduces students to fundamental notions of English phonetics, through transcription and oral practice.
