UFR Lettres et Sc. Humaines

The course involves the translation of a variety of texts – extracts from press articles, essays and novels – from French into English. Texts are given to the students every week. The correction is done collectively in class the week after. Testing: There will be two exams during the semester. The first is before the October holiday, the second at the end of the course. The final exam will be a translation of a text of about 300 words. Both American and British English are acceptable, as long as the student is consistent.  During the course, students will also be required to hand in at least one translation assignment by email. This assignment is not graded, but it is necessary that you submit a paper so that your use of English can be checked by the teacher. Students are encouraged to bring French/English or English dictionaries to the class. Grammar guides are also welcome. The final exam will take place without a dictionary. Participation counts to your final grade: if you miss classes your final grade will be lowered.

Semester 1: As the title says, this course is meant to provide the student with a panoramic overview of the history and geography of the British Isles, major date and facts, with particular focus on the developments in the second millenium CE (common era).

Semester 2:  This Course explores the main dates and events of the British Islesm with special focus on the history and nature of British institutions.

Ce cours traite des évolutions artistiques en Europe, de la Préhistoire à aujourd'hui. Sont joints les documents utiles à ce cours.

Ce cours est consacré au romancier, poète et dramaturge irlandais Samuel Beckett (1906-1989).

 Une attention particulière sera portée aux pièces de théâtre, qu’elles soient destinées à la scène, à la radio ou à la télévision. Il s’agira d’étudier le texte et sa mise en scène au prisme des autres œuvres fictionnelles et non fictionnelles de l’auteur, de manière à identifier et à comprendre les thématiques et les procédés d’écritures qui travaillent la poétique et l’esthétique de l’artiste, emblématiques d’une avant-garde européenne de la première moitié du XXème siècle.

It combines an examination of how sounds are produced and how they differ from French sounds, of issues in theoretical phonetics, with an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet, practical exercises in oral practice, sound discrimination, and phonetic transcription.

Mise à niveau des connaissances en orthographe, en morphologie et en syntaxe de la langue française dans le cadre de la filière "Métiers de la traduction" (LLCER Anglais - Espagnol).

Phonetics L2   The focus of this course is improved pronunciation. This essentially involves using the IPA, and familiarity with some technical terms that are used in basic linguistics. We will be using a variety of quizzes and games as well as exercises. Your first exam will consist of transcription from IPA into English: in the final exam you will be expected to also use the IPA to transcribe English words. The final exam will also include a test on common linguistic terms that have been studied in class.  Unfortunately, there is no set book for the course but I will provide you with the material in the form of booklets for classwork and homework.If you are interested in the study and theory of language, then you might look at these books which are aimed at a wide audience:Steven Pinker, The Language Instinct.
